The Formation Program is built from time spent working with top development clubs in Spain and within La Liga and is designed for competitive U9, U10, U11, and U12 players.
This stage focuses on individual development in technique, game understanding, personality, and speed through structured individual, group, and team training.
Because players develop at different rates, athletes are grouped by ability and performance rather than age alone, with training groups adjusted throughout the year to support continued progress.
The Formation Program is where players begin to establish themselves in the game and prepare for the demands of the Advancement Program.
The Advancement Program is designed for U12–U14 players ready for higher competitive demands.
Training environments are intentionally competitive and challenge players to respond to adversity, take ownership of their development, and raise their level of play. Players are placed in training and competition environments based on ability, potential, and performance, with movement throughout the year as development progresses.
A structured age group curriculum defines expectations at each stage, including the transition into 11v11 play and preparation for the Performance Program. By U15, players are positioned to begin a college advisory pathway aligned with their long term goals.
The Performance Program is built for players pursuing high school, college, and professional pathways.
This stage focuses on preparation and exposure through high level training, competitive environments, and a structured college advisory process. Coaches, curriculum, competition schedules, and accountability standards are aligned to the demands of state, regional, and national play.
Players compete in Academy, US Youth regional and national leagues, ECNL for girls, college showcases, and identification events to support long term goals. The club uses CollegeFitFinder to help players and families communicate, plan, and navigate college opportunities.
Our goal is to graduate every Timber and Thorn to college on academic merit, with the opportunity to continue playing at the next level.
The ECNL is an independent, non-profit organization sanctioned by US Club Soccer. Boise Thorns are Idaho’s only ECNL member club, competing in the Northwest Conference and national events, helping achieve a 94% college placement rate for over 34 years.
